The Reality
By Dasean Battle
The reality of it all when it comes to prison, is this. There are no men in prison anymore, just boys. How do we change this dynamic fellas? By being better men to the youth. By being involved with the youth. Cultivating the minds of the younger generation. I’m 31 and they consider me an old head, someone the youth looks up to when they come through the doors to start their time.
I came in at the age of 20, first number. I didn’t know what to expect. I was really scared but knew I had to make the best of it because I had a long road ahead of me. So I spent it bettering myself. Soaking up as much game as I could from individuals that have been doing time much longer than me. What I realized though, is the hidden motives that came with the game. We need to teach the youth out of love as older men in the community. Set examples for those coming up so they don’t go down the same roads as us.
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
By Dasean Battle
Prison is a world inside of another world. I sometimes find myself wondering if this is really my reality. If you have a loved one in prison, you may think it’s not real. I like to think of prisons as little cities, with sides of towns in them. We have jails, laws, and our own government. We have schools, grocery stores, churches, libraries, you name it. That’s the good in prisons.
There is corruption, drugs, violence and even death. That is the bad and the ugly truth about prison. The best advice I can give is, keep your head low, get into programming and stay busy. When problems arise, don’t be afraid to fight. The REAL killers aren’t starting fights, they’re more humble. The real issues are the people with outdates.
