“”Deconstructing Deviance””

By Joni Salyers

“DEVIANT” = One who’s behavior and attitudes differ from the norm, or accepted moral and social standards “
                                       Webster’s ll… 3rd. Edition
Deviance in many forms is widely prevalent in our American society today.
This is especially evident, in the fact that we have one of the highest incarceration rates in the world.
This phenomena is now being adversely compounded by the recent opioid addiction, now sweeping all socioeconomic sections of society.
These particular deviant classes made up of all classes of society are facing such a tremendous amount of suffering and death, largely due to their own conscious decisions and actions which deviate from the accepted norms and social standards.
There are factors that are presently contributing to the deviant behavior within these particular subgroups, so the ways curbing this deviant behavior are just as vast, and interconnected.
With respect to the mass incarceration aspect, I believe a way to curb the deviance would be to decriminalize and even legalize the use of many of the illegal substances, which would have a cascading effect at lowering the prison population on many fronts.
Secondly, stop the artificial inflation of drug prices from drug companies.
Prescribe less addictive forms of pain control, as well as spend more research money on alternative pain control methods.
